Our founder worked in clinical operations for 20+ years. Towards the end of this time, she realized that clinical operations teams were still mired in inefficiency. From manual data entry to communicating via email, teams were still employing processes that involved manual, repetitive work.
This persisted even with teams that were using clinical trial management systems, or CTMS. So, she set out to explore why.
It turned out that at the end, technology is just a tool. And like other types of tools, it can be too blunt, or too narrow, or originally designed for another use yet repurposed for the task at hand. What’s more important than the tool itself are the needs of the tool’s users.
To create a well suited tool for clinical operations, one must first seek a deep understanding of the workflows, goals, and culture of the trial management function across not just one, but multiple organizations.
Otherwise, the result is missing or shallow features that need to be supplemented with workarounds and spreadsheets – which creates more work and complexity! No wonder clinical operations teams hesitate to deploy new solutions.
